Dopo un anno di lenta agonia, ho deciso che è arrivato il momento del fatidico shut-down. Nell’ultimo anno non sono state scritte nuove recensioni per impegni di studio, e con il 2010 prevedo di avere ancora meno tempo a causa del lavoro.

]MANTRA[ è stata un'ottima occasione per informarmi sulle nuove uscite in ambito rock/metal (cosa che mi piace fare anche senza dover scrivere una recensione) e mettermi alla prova per quanto riguarda le mie capacità di giudizio e di contenimento del word count. Sono stato un po' meno soddisfatto del responso dei miei potenziali lettori: pochissimi sono stati visitatori fedeli; per un progetto online e pubblico questo ha un certo peso, pur trattandosi di un blog tendenzialmente di commenti personali, di giudizi espressi da un semplice ascoltatore di musica.

In futuro mi dedicherò alla stesura di classifiche annuali (e non) sulla mia pagina di RYM, concedendomi il lusso di recensire in modo estremamente stringato (max 1 riga) gli album secondo me meritevoli, ma il tutto resterà in una dimensione più nascosta e intima se vogliamo. ]MANTRA[ rimarrà qui a testimonianza di un viaggio concluso.

Colgo l'occasione per ringraziare, oltre ai lettori ovviamente, i miei due compagni di viaggio, metallic4xel e eccessivopostmoderno, che hanno contribuito con recensioni e supporto ideativo alla vita di ]MANTRA[. Grazie guys!

Puntuale è apparsa sul forum del magazine Revolver la classifica dei 20 album migliori dell’anno passato secondo i propri redattori. Indiscusso capolavoro progressive, riff d’apertura distorto e copertina indimenticabili. Se vi capita di dedicare i vostri pensieri agli emarginati e alla morte vi sarà impossibile lasciarsi soltanto lambire dall’irruenza intelligente delle prime 6 tracce/caricature, gioielli sonori che scardinano la struttura della rock-blues song introducendo i famosissimi fiati ora giunti a piena maturazione. Provocante la mini-suite ‘My God’, bruciante satira sul tema della religione che introduce la seconda parte del disco, dichiaratamente “pro-Dio ma anti-Chiesa”.

“The Watcher”

Fragilità e forza umana, simbolicamente racchiuse nel tessuto osseo che forma una vertebra, rappresentano le fondamenta del 10° album di casa Enslaved. La deriva progressive di Isa e Ruun viene qui elevata all’ennesima potenza, evocata in sognanti atmosfere Settantiane, esplicitata in malinconici cori e assoli dal sapore Pink Floydiano. Isocrone, le parti più tirate a base di blast beats e growls, innescano un processo di ibridazione che può riuscire solo ad una grande band, una sorta di viaggio con gli Yes nello Spazio cosmico.

“Death Anxiety”

Infiammata dalla diatriba con la propria label, la nuova “dichiarazione” del combo californiano è un assalto sonoro con un’urgenza ai limiti dell’industrial ed una produzione over-compressa ma tagliente, grazie ad un martellante Derek Youngsma e alle atmosfere quasi black della sempre più prominente Marta Peterson. I chorus melodici ridotti all’osso lasciano spazio ad uno screaming contagioso, rinforzato nella titletrack da Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying). 4 tracce (su 12) sono dedicate ai ricordi evocati da città o stati visitati in tour.

“Honey and Sulfur”

Riemergono dal profondo degli inferi i Vampiri inglesi, nel 10° anniversario di Cruelty and The Beast, non a caso con un concept album, incentrato sulla figura del primo serial killer che abbia orribilmente segnato con le sue nefandezze la storia, Gilles de Rais. Le orchestrazioni avvolgono con vellutata inevitabilità il sodato riffing di Paul Allender e le urla sgraziate di Dani Filth, annunciatrici delle catastrofi incombenti; Martin Skaroupka riesce nell’operazione di rinfrescare le partiture percussive, rimpiazzando ottimamente Adrian Erlandsson.

Ecco cosa succede quando droga e musica si combinano in modo eccellente. Non solo questo album è una pietra miliare in ambito rock, ma il terzo ed ultimo (siamo nel 1968, Hendrix entra tristemente nel ‘Club 27’) lavoro di Jimi primeggia portando l’EXPERIENCE al limite organico di psichedelia, blues, funk, r’n’r, r’n’b. In seguito all’abbandono del produttore e dei musicisti, il talento, ora svicolato, reinventa in un colpo solo tecniche, mix, cori e registrazione, perdendosi in indimenticabili jam session.
